As they unloaded a few things from the first truck, we could see that they seemed a bit embarrassed to have to tell us something. Seems that the other two trucks were EMPTY!! They were told our stuff had been loaded the friday before, so they hopped in the three trucks assigned to our move and what do you know, they hadn't been completely loaded up after all. They had to go back and load our remaining items and come back later. This put us behind schedule, so we waited an hour or so until they were back with everything - just in time for the rain to come down even harder. At least we had the shrink-wrapped sofa to sit on! I couldn't wait for the big chair and ottoman to arrive since I was so tired of only having the stairs to sit on.
The rain just kept on coming down hour after miserable hour as our stuff kept flooding into the house. I had the task of working the "bingo board" as the numbered boxes and furniture came past me. The guys called out one incoherent number after another. Their heavy accents made it hard to know what they were saying half the time. I did my best to check everything off the list.
Once the moving guys finally left a few hours later, I was able to go inside to see the sea of cardboard and various items strewn about the house. Dan and I tried to tell them where things should go, but it was hard to make such split second decisions and nothing seemed to be where it belonged. When they were all gone and the quiet stillness took over in the disarray, we could only look at each other and try our best to work up a fake smile to keep each other's morale boosted. We sure did have our work cut out for ourselves.
Dan has been left with the brunt of the grunt work as I am unable to lift anything heavier than a cat. I am used to being able to work with heavy things, move furniture and put in my fair share of strenuous work. It is hard to stand and watch him do most of this by himself. Now would be a great time to have a team of friends and family working together on this huge task, but it is just up to us right now.
Day by long day, we try to whittle away at this mountain of work. We take great pleasure and pride in the little things. Every time we break down an empty box and take it to the garage, it feels like a big deal and we rejoice in it. Tomorrow we will have been in the house for two weeks, and it is slowly beginning to shape up. Three of the bedrooms are still storage rooms and the dining room is a catch all room for things we don't know what to do with at this point. Each day brings us a little closer to a normal looking house. We are looking forward to when it starts to feel more like home.
