We recently took on the task of painting the entryway, stairway and upstairs hall. This is the first thing people see when coming in the front door and believe me, the first impression it left with me when I first saw it was chicken...raw chicken flesh. If a color could leave a smell in the air and in your nose...it would be this one. Why on earth would anyone go for this foofy, fleshy blecky color is beyond me, but they did and we HAD to get it out of our lives forever.
As we were painting, we got our Girl Scout Cookies delivered by our neighborhood mom and daughter cookie sellers. The mom asked how we were doing and when I said we were painting tan over a pink, her response after peeking in was, "My goodness, pink, how long have you had to live with that?" We said a year and she shook her head. "Wow. It definitely looks better." Our friends Anna and Tony who had just stopped by for a visit, once realizing our hatred for the pink, agreed whole-heartedly that it was the most wrong color for that space. No one liked it except the color blind folks who painted it years ago.
A color can make such a big impact on a home. This new color combo feels like home...little by little we are making this house our home.
It was once the color of uncooked chicken.
A few walls cracks needed to be repaired first. We preferred the color of the spackle over the chicken flesh pink by far.
Molly helped Daddy paint the stairway corner wall a darker shade of Valspar "Coffee" by Waverly Classics. A color we've used in both our homes in Albuquerque for accent walls and fireplaces.
As you can see our little apprentice is doing a great job with the roller.
We had a vast expanse of the pukey chicken pink, as you can see. Accented by glints of gold light plates and a gold chandelier...even bleckier.

The entryway was next...
The upstairs hallway. This pink color made all the other rooms' colors look terrible. A common area should always be a warm neutral so a bathroom or bedroom can handle a more personalized color such as lavender or blue or yellow....this really helped tone things down with the tan.
The lighter tan covered all walls except the small stairway corner wall. This other shade is Valspar "Sand #3" in the Laura Ashley collection of colors. Again, a color we've used in both homes in Albuquerque for the main living room walls and my old bedroom walls. A very nice color.

The next big painting task may be the formal living and dining rooms which are still a dark pukey raw chicken pink and a pale yellow with wine themed border paper....ugh. What were the previous owners thinking?
